First Stop: Prague

The first stop on our interrail tour was Prague, capital of the Czech Republic. I'd heard amazing things about Prague from friends who had visited, so my expectations were pretty high. We arrived late on the Friday evening, so there was no time to do anything other than check in and go to bed.

We were up early the next morning to join a free walking tour. Our hostel was slightly out of the centre, so we had to catch a tram for a few stops then wandered to find the Old Town Square. The square is beautiful, but it was absolutely rammed with tourists, which slightly detracted from the scenery, but is to be expected in high season! We joined one of the many walking tours that depart on a regular basis from the square and began a 2 hour tour of the city. We took in the main sites of the Old Town, starting in the main square and moving down to the river for a lovely view of the castle, while learning about the history of the city. We then wandered through the Jewish Quarter and down some of Prague's beautiful streets, before ending the tour back near the Old Town Square.

As we were only in Prague for a couple of days we headed to the train station to book our on-going train to Vienna and figure out how the inter-rail passes actually work. Initially it took us a while to work out how the pass worked, what journeys it was valid on and if we had to reserve train seats or not. As we were travelling in such a large group, we didn't want to risk the trains being full on the day, so we decided to reserve seats and it only cost us a couple of euros. We then spent the rest of the afternoon on a bit of a wild goose chase, attempting to find a park near the main train station. We did eventually find it, after traipsing round for about an hour, and rewarded ourselves with a well deserved beer before heading back into the centre for some food.

That evening we did what any decent Brits abroad would do, and went on a pub crawl! Thanks to it's stag-do reputation, Prague has a decent nightlife and the pub crawl we went on was great! I can't actually tell you that much detail abut the pub crawl, as my memory is pretty hazy, but surely that's a sign of a great night?

After a late night and great lie in, we went out for a hangover cure breakfast before heading to Prague castle. It was boiling and the walk up to the castle was a slight struggle in my hangover state, but the views at the top were so worth it! The church in the main courtyard of the castle was also a highlight - it was beautiful! To make the most of the warm weather we then decided to rent some pedalos and had a chilled out floating around the river, which was great fun and a nice way to see the city from a different point of view.

Prague

We only had 2 full days in Prague and managed to see and do quite a lot, but there was lots we didn't get to experience! I loved the city and would recommend it as a great city break destination - I'd definitely go back again!

Have you been to Prague? What would you recommend?
