Skiing in Wanaka

Hello Wonderful People!

After a stunning drive through Arthurs Pass and down the coast we stayed for a few nights in Wanaka. This little town nestled by a lake is surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery. The town has a great vibe and I felt like I was in a ski resort in the French Alps. Before we arrived in Wanaka we were torn between skiing there or in Queenstown. However, as soon as we arrived our decision was made. We hired skis, boots and clothing from Green Toad for the equivalent of around £40 (bargain) and headed to our van for an early night in preparation for our day of skiing.

The resort we headed to was Treble Cone and it took us around 40 minutes to drive there in our trusty camper from Wanaka. There was plenty of parking at the bottom of the mountain and we then got a return mini bus ticket (£9?) to take us up to the top. We managed to blag student lift passes for about £30 for the day and headed of to catch our first lift.

Skiing in New Zealand was a very different experience to skiing in Europe. The runs weren't very well marked and I think I spent most of my time off-piste. The snow wasn't fabby either, and was verrrry slushy at the bottom. However, for a day skiing Treble Cone was ideal as it had a good variety of runs and a nice café/restaurant where we stopped for lunch, with reasonably priced food.

After a cracking day on the slopes, we headed back into Wanaka for a spot of après ski. All the bars in town had happy hour to coincide with people coming back from the mountain. We then went on to have a cracking, and very messy night out in this fabulous town. Wanaka will remain one of my firm New Zealand favourites. I loved it.

Byeeeee!
